I am editing away on my novel during my last college holiday, and I wanted to post this poem I wrote, which appears at the beginning of the last section of the book. It's a song of hope for the Griffyngrites, a captive people rising up against their enemy. They sing it when the going gets tough and they're at the end of their rope, to remind themselves of why they fight.
"All For a Kingdom"
“What is this cause for which we fight?”
My doubting heart would say,
When battling to find the light,
Only prolongs the pain.
I cannot help but question now,
The reason for it all;
All for a kingdom, still somehow,
Our warriors fight and fall.
So long we’ve faced a sure defeat,
At the hand of darkness swift,
It seems that right below our feet,
The sand begins to shift;
Each loyal heart begins to quake,
Each conscience starts to fail,
Can it be, ‘tis all a mistake,
For which the mourners wail?
But lo, my troubled soul revives,
My mind begins to clear,
There is a reason for the lives
Poured out to quench the fear,
How could I let the enemy
Cause me to shun the truth?
I’ll fix my eyes upon the light,
And let it be the proof.
With brothers, sisters dear to heart,
We will march, side by side,
Although the shore seems high and dark,
We’re still a rising tide;
Throughout the land, against the lies,
Of our true cause we’ll sing:
All for a kingdom we still strive,
Because we need a king.
